About Mrs Roe
IF YOU PLANT YOUR SEED IN MY LAND THEN THE DECISION OF CULTIVATION IS MINE
Mrs Roe is the alter-ego of Artist Kerry Lemon who creates a series of artworks as testimony. She seeks to explore her dislocation from the land via the global and localised power structures which influence the ethics of femxle sexuality and reproduction. An examination into the loss of her tribes dwindling eco-cultural practice of contraceptive/abortive plants, facilitated by a localised, feminine infrastructure of care.
This indigenous, verbal, medicinal plant heritage once held by womxn has mutated into a patriarchal system of western medicine and crimalised abortion. Historically womxn were banned from studying and holding power in the fields of medicine, religion and politics, which removed femxle sexual health from community midwives and herbalists, These historically male dominated professions have subsequently determined the culture and law on womxn’s reproductive power. We have lost.
MRS ROE illuminates our disordered relationships with the planet and each other. She utilises abortive herbs to re-examine ancient knowledge systems and imagine a possible non-hierarchical future, co-existent with our bacterial, animal, geological, botanical planet.
