Overview

Presented by Ruup & Form, SIMPLING was a solo show by Kerry Lemon, working through her performance persona MRS ROE. The exhibition reclaimed suppressed traditions, centring the embodied plant knowledge of local healers as acts of sovereignty and resistance.

Taking its name from the historical practice of “simpling” – the gathering of medicinal plants by midwives and wise women – the show explored reproductive justice, ecological intimacy, and feminist reclamation. Sculptures and immersive installations reanimated abortifacient herbs such as rue, tansy, and pennyroyal as living archives of care, choice, and defiance.

At the heart of the exhibition was a new series of six brass wall sculptures created during Lemon’s Paris residency and inspired by the botanical motifs of Art Nouveau. These rare, intimate works mark a shift from her large-scale commissions, grounded in personal ritual and collective memory.
