Overview

Awarded Fabrica’s Making Space artist residency for 2023 to share the iterative MRS ROE project in response to the recent Roe v Wade overturn in the USA. An opportunity for the artist to test new ground in their practice, and utilising the former church gallery space to experiment with new ways of working.

Conceived as a multi-screen video installation and performance MRS ROE explores the social and political history of birth control and abortion and the erosion of common and specifically female knowledge of abortive native herbs.

The residency included an Artist Talk + Q&A with the Gallery Co-Director Liz Whitehead and a closed performance and round table discussion with invited academics to explore the social, historical and feminist context for the MRS ROE series. Invited guests included specialisrts in gender studies, women’s health, reproduction, religious symbolism, sociology, herbalism and ecology from institutions including; Kings College, Cambridge University, Brighton University, Museum of the Home and The National Gallery.
